I feel way more accomplished and find it so much more satisfying writing about things that I genuinely enjoy, rather than painstakingly searching for good points in – or slagging off – things that don’t inspire me. For this reason, ‘Man Alive’ by Everything Everything is my new favourite album.
Having seen – and fallen in love with – Everything Everything earlier this year at T In The Park, I practically knocked myself out jumping at the chance to review their debut album. Well, not literally. I’m quite excitable and fairly prone to hyperbolism. But it gets the point across.
Everything Everything manage to achieve ambiance whilst maintaining an upbeat and offbeat tempo. Plus effortless vocal harmonies, which they don’t falter on live, give the album an instantly recognisable, quirky quality. There’s even a hint of rock sneaking through on ‘Suffragette Suffragette’ which satisfies the rock chick inside me.
As much as my opinion may be tainted by a certain sentimental value (Everything Everything being the first band I saw at T In The Park and, therefore, the opening to the soundtrack of my weekend) I think this lot have got something special going on. The mere fact that songs like ‘MY KZ, UR BF’, ‘Photoshop Handsome’ and ‘Suffragette Suffragette’ instantly come flooding back to me six weeks later speaks volumes.
Buy this album. See them live. Make them huge.
