Eoghan Colgan is a 28-year-old Northern Irish singer/songwriter and also, strangely, a practicing Doctor. This – his second EP – contains fragile words of love and loss onto which Colgan empties a twinkling of piano and jangling of guitar. If this makes it sound sugary sweet, it is not. He manages to steer it out of twee-town with distressed-sounding vocals and often twisted lyrics. He conjures quite a weird and wonderful image in standout track ‘The Only One I Want’ with the repeated line of “look at you now as blood drips from your crown”.
Coming on like Damien Rice’s slightly emotionally disturbed cousin, this EP – whilst not being anything extraordinary – has a complex and lingering beauty.
