This was billed as a Halloween Darktronica event and it certainly had an atmosphere about it – tables, seats and candles at the Rumshack and an attentive audience – no yapping during the music!
First up was Sevca, who gave us a set of beguiling tracks based on her voice (or other sounds) live-sampled and looped, along with minimal electronic percussion and beats. With a slightly cabaret-esque delivery there might have been shades of what Amanda Palmer used to do… very atmospheric and yes, a bit spooky!
Dora Lachaise was us next, looking a bit Corpse Bride in a white wedding dress-type garment with a veil on top. Playing guitar and using some computer samples, she was accompanied by Jonni Slater on keyboard and sometimes backing vocals. There were some slightly unsettling offerings in the set, for example ‘Bone Collector’ and current macabre-themed single ‘Red Door’ (this house wants to eat you!), all performed in her expressive vocal style.
Last act on was Ember Quine, who gave us a set of dark and brooding electronic which became increasingly beat-heavy as the set drew on, to the point of being almost ravey by the time encore track ‘Weirdo’ came around. An outbreak of spontaneous dancing thus ended the evening, which gave three incredibly talented writer/performers a chance to get scary on us, which they did indeed do. A great way to spend October 31st…
