The fact its lead track shares its name with a Sonic Youth album doesn’t mean that this Dundee 4-piece are in that noise-rock ballpark, but they will probably please fans of that genre, as their sound is certainly influenced by bands such as Dinosaur Jr. and Pavement. The former perhaps applies most to the title track here – the most appealing of the three, combining post rock sound and riffs with a kind of pop sensibility.
t’s also, despite the obvious US feel, very Dundonian in style – not The View or even the Associates, but somewhere inbetween, from that halcyon era when bands like Laeto were making ‘difficult’ guitar music. This boils down the decidedly anti-commercial post-rock of the early noughties (ha,we can look back at them now!) and as I say, gives it an unexpectedly catchy feel.
The other two tracks here are rather overshadowed by the lead, straying away from the post-punk theme and instead veering towards a curious grunge/goth hybrid. No bad thing, but ‘Washing Machine’ will hopefully be their future blueprint, and hopefully the one that sees them clean up! (you’re fired. Ed).
