Is this Deathcats last defiant snarl or a weak purr before the band goes on hiatus?
This split EP with the New Swears treads a similar path to their debut ‘All Hail Deathcats’, short, spiky songs dosed in loads of reverb. ‘Liquid Gold’ kicks things off at a frantic pace, all crashing symbols, rumbling bassline and screaming guitar, as assured as the band have ever sounded. ‘You’ is an anthem in a similar vein to their masterpiece ‘DREAMZ’, ‘Sprint’ is almost an MOR ballad delivered with their usual dash of humour: “You’re wearing me down, you got me six feet underground”, and ‘End Game’ is a screeching garage rock number that wrap things up from the Cumbernauld Fleeto. God bless Deathcats.
Ottawa’s New Swears have knocked out a bunch of good-times garage punk nuggets with the likes of ‘Satan Loves You’, ‘Sloppy Blackout’ and ‘Scru Bar’s’ sounding like a bunch of carefree young men getting pissed up and having a right good old singalong with their pals. No earnest bullshit on display here, thank goodness, just rock n roll and the confidence of youth. As Christmas presents go, there’s something there for everyone in the family to enjoy in this split EP.
