Local hero in the making, Rahul.mp3 gives the people exactly what they want from behind the decks. Whether that be Lil Jon, Ice Spice or even C+C Music Factory, courtesy of the Bob Sinclar 2006 hit that I’d safely assumed had been consigned to the dustbin of history. The crowd’s reaction tells me otherwise. He’s ably assisted by dazzling strobes and some of cupcakKe’s entourage, who can’t resist a little twerking while chucking out free merch. There’s a sweet message of thanks to end his half hour, but the party atmosphere is well and truly ignited.
cupcakKe emerges fashionably late, casually asking “who’s sucking dick tonight?” before barrelling through ‘Queef’ and ‘Vagina’. Almost absurdly on brand, and that’s only the first five minutes. Audience members are invited onstage to dance it out for ‘Deepthroat’ and ‘Little Red Riding Good’, with wildly mixed styles and abilities (one drunk girl gets onstage and immediately throws up), but the two that are clearly the best are held back for a dance-off during ‘Spider-man Dick’ and ‘CPR’, the winner getting swiftly cashapp’ed $1000 – not bad for ten minutes of voguing.
And it’s not all smut shock – much of the new album shows a more ambitious musicality, especially ‘Aura’, but it can’t be denied that the best lines and the best rapping is found on the early cuts. That said, cupcakKe does make time for a contest to see who in the audience has the best porn moans, so it’s not like she’s turning her back on the graphic sexuality that she’s made her name on, maybe just tempering it a little.
The whole show is performed with a backing track, which hardly seems necessary when cupcakKe clearly has the bars (see: ‘Dora’ and ‘Squidward Nose’ despite the drunk stage invader), and it also means that she has to shout over it to emphasise the choice phrases, and her voice is already sounding a little hoarse just a few dates into this tour.
It’s all over in barely an hour, and without the crowd work and hilarious chat it would come off as a little lacking. However, cupcakKe’s effortless charm, the strength of the material (even if not always performed to the highest standard) and an excellent crowd make it a raunchy, rowdy night to remember.
