Comets and Cartwheels is an exciting fledgling label based in Glasgow, started in 2012 by music promoter Paul Downie and musician/artist manager Vicki Cole. It should be a challenging new venture, but one they’re well equipped to handle. “We’ve been promoting gigs under the Pelmet Nites banner for a few years, so we thought a logical progression would be to start releasing music too, especially as I do some web design and we could take advantage of the skills and contacts we already had.“ Vicki commented. It concentrates mainly on indie and folk genres, and aims to follow in the vein of other successful labels such as Fence Records, Sub Pop and Drag City.
They may still be in their infancy but they’re certainly not taking it slow. As well as their recent label launch party at The Tall Ship, their focus has been on the ‘Seven Hundred Birds’ single from minimalist folk band Quickbeam (pictured), released on 9th April. They’ve collaborated with BAFTA Short Film award nominee Mat Sheldon, and photographer Iain Struthers on an amazing promo video for the single. Also in the pipeline is work with Glasgow-based indie bands Endor and PartWindPartWolf, as well as hitting up some Canadian connections, which could bring another element to the Glasgow scene. With some great names on their roster, and a flashy website to boot, keep your ears and eyes peeled for what’s to come later this year.
