So here they are, the chaotic and pulsating sound of the Dijon Five, first album release and terrorising Scotland throughout 2014.
There’s a bit of soul, some Alabama Five type grooviness and some outrageous takes on modern life in this little ole country of ours. There’s some echoes of early JAMMs/KLF in the vocals and the mixing of rap and other styles with a half decent brass section, it’s all a bit daft but they can certainly play.
Sounding like a comedy version of Primal Scream’s ‘Rocks Off’, first track ‘How Many Many’ puns itself through a massive groove and has some hilarious couplets.
‘Ginger Girl’ may be accused of being “Gingerist” but is again ridiculously OTT, like some bastard offspring of the Proclaimers. According to the press release they have played acoustic versions of ‘It Might Not Be The End Of The World But It Always Ends In Tears With A Ginger Girl/Guy’ at every Red Road/Gorbals flat demolitions, goodness me…
More serious issues are explored in ‘Guy Icon’, same sex marriage getting a bit of a going over, Dijon style. ‘Dance Off’ and ‘Bouncy Ball’ riff on stupid subjects but allow the band to explore reggae, rave, funk and god knows what else.
‘Capturado’ is I think the lead track on the album, accompanied with a Sergio Leone style video filmed in some stables in god knows where, some mariachi backing and well oof, I wish them well, Scotchland needs good fun and I think this is the combo who are doing it best in 2014.
