It’s hard to see who Chris Cornell is hoping to please with this latest single, the first to be taken from his forthcoming second solo album. Noticeably quieter than his work his Audioslave (if they turn it up to eleven, then he’s wavering around the four or five mark), and nowhere near as experimental or groundbreaking as his material with Soundgarden, this is more mainstream than anyone in their right mind could want Cornell to be. Even his trademark gravel-edged vocals sound reined in, and that can never be a good thing. It’s still accomplished enough, and perfectly pitched for American radio, but it sticks too closely to the soft-rock standards to attract much attention. Let’s hope that the rest of his album is more experimental, or Cornell will soon be dropping off the Cool List.
