New Romantic classic covered in modern indie style, all slashing guitars, tumbling drums and….. sorry, are you drifting off? Whereas the Spandau Ballet original reflected a band based almost entirely on style over substance, this version seems to think that adding a cockernee vocal gives added ‘authenticity’. Yes, you read that right: ‘authenticity’ and ‘Spandau Ballet’ in the same sentence. London’s Cazals have lost the joyful absurdity of the original and replaced it with a Topshop sheen, ironically linking together an increasingly vacuous indie scene with its New Romantic forebear. This ticks all the boxes for a dancefloor smash – but when was that ever enough?
