“Eh, I’m quite drunk”. So declares John B McKenna, offering a somewhat unnecessary disclaimer to his appreciative audience. If McKenna was to be judged solely on his appearance and verbose lyricism, the verdict would surely be something along the lines of ‘tortured artist type’. But his frequent and charming between-song banter (including a plug of his demo cd followed by, “I only made six though”) reveals an unjustifiably modest and endearingly unpretentious demeanour.

Bulleit sessions bring Guitar Shorty to Glasgow

American electric blues pioneer Guitar Shorty comes to Scotland to share a Fence-related bill which spans the decades, with appearances from The Aliens and Found. The first in a series of events sponsored by Premium Whiskey brand Bulleit Bourbon takes place at Glasgow venue Maggie May’s on April 10th.
Guitar Shorty regularly packs clubs in the US and in particular in LA. – credited with influencing both Jimi Hendrix (he married Jimi’s sister) and Buddy Guy, Shorty has also has extensive session credentials including work with Ray Charles, BB King and Little Richard.
The evening’s mission to link music ancient and modern is supported by the appearance of The Aliens – whose Beta Band lineage leads to both Oasis and Radiohead via of Messrs Gallagher and Yorke crediting the Fife act as an influence. And electronic art-folk ensemble Found complete the lineup.

Two days after the first event, Guitar Shorty will be inviting Glasgow musicians to bring their guitar to take part in a ‘jam-along’ with him. A rare opportunity for guitar aficionados to join musical forces with a renowned artist, Bulleit Jamming looks set to be one of the largest live group musical events Glasgow has ever seen. It takes place on Saturday 12th April at 3pm, Merchant Square, Glasgow. (Please note that participants must be 18 years old or above).
