Hull solo rocker Calboa is flying high with a track which is ear medicine for anyone who seeks the more cheerful and upbeat records in modern indie.
Never shy to unleash a catchy hook, Calboa grips like a biker’s glove on this new release. He kicks off with a guitar melody which is super sharp and comes with it is a drumbeat which will have you tapping along in a frenzy. The intro is possibly more prolonged than expected, but I enjoy its structure because it leads us into the verse tremendously.
Singing through a vocal effect which is unconventional, Calboa shines radiantly. The verse is potent with Calboa performing at his best. For me, I enjoy how such a young musician brings a vocal sound which many could easily compare to some of the greats in the indie space.
I can hear a lot of influences on this, the follow-up to June release ‘A Condition Called Loneliness‘. A band which I have been following for years stands out as a strong influence, Circa Waves. Musically, they follow a similar path with feel-good indie taking the forefront of the mix. However, vocally, Calboa is sitting on a shelf of his own. So much so, I cannot pinpoint an exact similarity proving his distinction as a modern-day frontman.
The chorus is brilliant; unlike a lot of similar tracks, the verse is the faster-paced section. Furthermore, the chorus takes a step back, and the beat sits deep with elongated hits. It is not the first time it has been done before in indie, but it is refreshing to hear it work so well here.
