If Mercury Rev had not already put an album out this year, you’d swear this was theirs.
It has the same slow, mournful horn parts and cascading, gorgeously glistening strings. Bror Forsgren’s slow, sinuous and soulful voice clasped my ears and my synapses, gently but surely.
Forsgren has a fantastic way with vocal phrasing and this really comes through on songs such as ‘I Need Something Ne’ and ‘No Such Thing As Love’. In an age where singers feel the need to belt it out on every song, it is a joy to discover a troubadour who treats his audience with sympathy and enough respect to know that we will want to both listen and work on a song. The music, too, is striking – black as night on first listen, slow, blue and nagging as melancholy the next.
