It is a universal truism that, with all the great songs ever written (and still to be written), the better the song, the less of it there is.
Sparse choruses, tight choruses, clean clear synth and keyboard lines and a dominating voice – all are here, present and correct. This EP is the third release in the past 18 months from these boys and is quite justifiably getting them to pick up support from all corners. Noise rock, it would seem, is very much back in favour and these boys are revelling in it. As they rightly should. This is a solid, ten minute slab of meat which will fill out every corner of the stomach and satisfyingly thump you, dear listener, therein afterwards.
This is not a record to put on when doing the ironing or the washing up – this positively demands that you listen to it. As it should. If the rest of the upcoming debut album is anything like as good as this, then these boys are on to a sure-fire winner.
There are, in the space of this disc’s ten minutes, more memorable riffs and catchy pop hooks crammed in than there have been to most albums this year. And that’s not all. This is a stunningly propulsive disc, propelled, if indeed, not lifted off the ground by the drummer, who, if he doesn’t quite succeed in creating a thunderstorm, certainly has a damned good go at it.
The results cause the heart to palpitate and the adrenalin glands to go into overdrive. They’ve also got that one crucial quality which all great bands, ever since the birth of This Is Spinal Tap have been required to possess, in order to ensure longevity – humour. ‘Danny Glover Isn’t Dead’ is a fine, fitting tribute to the US actor and an able display of each of this band’s finest qualities.
