This was a great night oot – 3 bands for 8 quid or so… a bargain if ever there was one, and with the Last Night From Glasgow stamp of approval.
First up were Big Girl’s Blouse, a four-piece outfit from somewhere in Lanarkshire, who after an adjustment to the vocal mic after their first track came across very strongly. Guitarist Ross may have been a bit worse for wear, and when he lay on the floor for an ambitious solo BM was a bit concerned that he might not get back to his feet again, but like a trouper he did! Songs were good, including a track which may have been called ‘Everybody Died…’ – maybe it was because BM was listening to a lot of REM on Saturday but the guitars sounded quite like them, although speaking to the bassist afterwards he had no particular interest in REM at all… information shortage means that BM can’t actually namecheck the whole band but they were very good indeed.
After a brief pause Weekend Debt took the stage – an all-male ensemble of very gifted players who really took the roof off with the glorious guitar-based songs – BM was thinking maybe some early Franz influences, some pop-punk influences as well, and most of the songs had a breakdown to encourage the audience to clap before the final chorus, quite a commercial thing and actually they could be in line to break through given their obvious talent and quite widespread appeal – you heard it here first, quite likely if they can a decent amount of radio airplay etc – v good indeed!
The venue was pretty busy as The Brontes took the stage, four females (can BM still say this) plus one male, so lead vocals, bass and 2 guitarists and a mighty drummer at the back… By now the atmosphere was at fever pitch and BM busted a few moves at the front, they were just so good… A heady combination of Talking Heads-influence (although who know if they have ever listened to them), Franz Ferdinand and maybe Gang of Four (ancient but these things come around), they blasted through a good few tracks, including BM thinks, their last single ‘First Hand Arrogance’ – another band that Brontes (who were playing under the “secret” “Eyre” moniker tonight) sounded a wee bit like was again REM, but who knows if they know of their music, often these things happen by osmosis – anyway it was a great gig for all concerned and BM went home happy…
