Another great Last Night from Glasgow event, this took place at Kelvinbridge venue Inn Deep, where one arch was commandeered by LNFG overlord (and a man of great musical taste) Ian Smith. BM missed first on Andrew W but did arrive in time to see Sophie of Lemon Drink do several songs (Kirsty was “unavailable” after a hen do but did turn up a bit later). We got among others ‘Ghosts’, ‘Mercury’ and ‘Manic’, with Sophie’s amazing voice soaring as we watching the pishing rain outside and thought this was a great way to spend a wet Glasgow afternoon (the beer was good and reasonably priced as well). She was almost upstaged by an enthusiastic toddler, but that is showbiz…
Next up were L-Space, playing as a duo (Lilly and Gordon). They played tracks from debut album ‘Kipple Arcadia’, a couple of songs from a new double A side and a nice Tom Waits cover (during which one of several dugs in the building, Beanz the pug, owned by poet Stephen Watts), had an altercation about treats with Andrew W’s dug, and had to be hauled out… showbiz again…
The Girl Who Cried Wolf were next, Lauren on piano/vocals and Audrey on pared-down drums. This was a great set, including ‘Warrior’, debut single ‘Second Best’ (some barbed words about music industry sexism) and they finished with a completely new song, which also sounded amazing… Wonderful stuff, and BM can’t help thinking (again) that this could go far…
Last up was David MacGregor, playing under his Broken Chanter moniker – he said before that he was a bit knackered but these songs sounded better than ever… Just playing on acoustic guitar, his voice fair filled the room, and his patter was… maybe similar to last night, according to some of the audience… Highlights were the catchy ‘Wholesale’, the next single ‘Should We Be Dancing’ and the conflicted ‘Don’t Move To Denmark’, which gets better with every hearing in BM’s opinion.
There was also a hilarious moment when, after DM asked if anyone was gauping at him from outside (there wasn’t, at this point, although a few folk on KG walkway had looked in before), a LNFG regular rushed outside and did the classic ‘nose against the window’ thing, to much hilarity, interrupting a song, after which David had to regain composure… served him right for asking in the first place!
Not too much else to say apart from respect due to Ian and the LNFG organisation for giving us punters great music in great surroundings.
