After the success of ‘Ambient1’, David MacGregor (of Kid Canaveral and Broken Chanter repute) is back with another, with a great title. Does it refer to the fact that Mount Florida is a bugger to run around cos it is a bit hilly or the fact that his lockdown hairstyle has gone the full Eno (see early Roxy Music videos to see what might have happened…).
The tracks on this EP are instrumental and reflective, with mainly keyboard, electronic percussion and weather effects.
‘Rubha Alainn’ sounds like modular synth and piano, and is rather oddly like something from OMD’s third album, whoever would have thought…but lovely and haunting…
There is a lot of rain on ‘That’s Me Away’, plus low-key synth chords and electric piano…and it actually sounds a bit like Kraftwerk rehearsing in Pollock Park – niiiice.
Things picks up a bit with “self-improvement style physicks” which has loads more synth and sounds a bit like a more pastoral Blanck Mass, another influence BM could never have imagined mentioning in this review – the backing cheers come in and out like a long-remembered football match of the mind…
And last track ‘2020 iS gOiNg tO bE oUr YeAr’ (and yes there are caps and noncaps in the title…), WTF, is this Chas and Dave, no, but some nifty piano playing before the whole thing phases out into the ambient void…
Altogether a great, varied and entertaining piece of work, and hope MacG incorporates some of this stuff into his live sets in the great untested future – “new normal” etc…
