Blondie 4(0)-Ever: Greatest Hits Deluxe Redux / Ghosts Of Download (Universal)

By • Feb 4th, 2015 • Category: long players

Although they may have seemed like one of punk’s poppies and lighter acts, on listening to these songs again and again, there is a real coldness and hardness to the band.
Indeed, some of them positively glint with malevolence and emotional menace.
What keeps them poppy, however, is the sweep and crisp best provided by Clement Burke. Chris Stein’s fizzy guitar and electronics work helps quite a bit here too. They’ve got serious points to make but know that the best way to get us to digest them is by keeping it crisp and fast.
And topping it all off is the majestic Ms Deborah Harry. Both devil and diva, she proves herself here as the Sylvia Plath of punk rock. Tales of cheating lovers and low life New York are swooned over and spat out with the glorious joie de vivre of one who knows she’s in full command of her surroundings.
