Severe and dark, BeckMilli gets her 2021 under way with her stand out new track, ‘Gotham’.
It is a track which follows on from a very successful 2020 for the London rapper, and she proves her quality once again with this stellar performance. Moreover, BeckMilli raps about her experiences growing up in the UK capital, and she speaks about how she is trying to get out of the “concrete jungle”.
Vocally, her words are refreshing for anybody looking for motivation. Also, BeckMilli reassures all aspirants that they can achieve what they want if they stick to their goals. Nevertheless, for me, the musical foundation heads down a different route with a dark and somewhat eery vibe being present. Moreover, it kicks off with a solemn aura, and this trend carries on for the majority of the piece.
As the track progresses, I find myself gravitating closer to BeckMilli. Her influences also play an integral part in her approach to post-genre grime, and she drops hints of her idols through her arrangements. Furthermore, a strong Skepta vibe leaps out, and she references artists like Cardi B.
Overall, ‘Gotham’ is a track which gets better every time I hit play. The instrumental is memorable, and her rap delivery is stimulating. But, I still feel as though there is plenty more for BeckMill to give here. Something feels missing, and I am yet to put my finger on what it could be. Mind you; it would not surprise me to hear a follow-up single to this one in quick succession to finish her message.
