Be You Own Pet wrapped up their Teenage Heaven tour with Birthday Girl (NYC) in Neumos, Seattle.
Birthday Girl were up first; they were effortlessly cool, bouncing between pop and rock as lead Eva Smittle sauntered around the stage hugging audience members whilst maintaining a lollypop for the entire set. It’s a set that went down really well and set the energy for the headliners perfectly.
Be Your Own Pet split shortly after the hugely successful release of ‘Get Awkward’ citing the toxic music industry as the reason, and it was interesting to see how a band so defined by teen angst could pull it off 15 years down the road. This was no sad hark back to the glory days however, with a new album ‘Mommy’, BYOP have retained their furious punk rock sound but with a bit of a wider range musically and new stories to talk about: “I’ve got two kids and a mortgage? What the fuck?”.
The live show has not given up any of its energy with Jonas Stein jumping all over the stage and Jemina Pearl crowd surfing till the end.
The old cuts like ‘Becky’ still hit hard but BYOP have come back with more to say and the crowd loved it.
