Bas Jan have new material out, and this track is a quirky reflection on self-realisation set to an initially quite minimalist electronic backbeat which further expands into something more like a Pet Shop Boys-esque synth pile-up before buildsing into a wonderfully dark and rich CODA.
“I was afraid, and then I knew – I’ve got nothing to lose…” go the deadpan female vocals. This could be interpreted as optimistic or fatalistic, perhaps in equal measure.
The London-based quartet were one of Lost Map’s most interesting signings, although this and the new album are coming out on Fire Records – this track further provokes… in a good way!
