Happy Songs (bandcamp)

Stephen Jones, aka Babybird, continues his prodigious and catalogue-unfriendly output (this gets more like the Fall every year in terms of releases) with the ‘Happy Songs’ album, another eruption of emotional but spiky songs…

There are 18 songs here, released May 1 (there are online sightings of more output since then; BM just cannae keep up, though ‘Fake Blood‘ was most recent, in April.

Highlights for BM are ‘You Held Me Like a Gun’, which displays the gentle menace which is at the heart of most of his best work…and ‘Blood Boiler’, which could soundtrack some Northern English crime series…

The songs are melodic, sometimes wistful, and although nostalgia is an available option, they never quite go there although some of the themes are very evocative of times past…

As always the singing is amazing, probably one of England’s finest vocalists of this and any era…

Other tracks are frankly hilarious (‘Hey When This is Over, Wanna Go to McDonalds’, which is where everybody fucking went this week…

Listening to this, every track has something to offer, so BM again salutes the songwriting genius that is Stephen Jones.
