So Babybird is prolific on Bandcamp, and here is another one… another album… good grief!
This has all the makings of a death concept album, the title track has Stephen Jones imaging himself in the coffin – it is quite a mellow song though…
This eight track album appears to be a meditation on death, with some rather creepy soundtrack inserts on track two, ‘I Am Not Here’, but a nice washing soundtrack over it… for over 7 minutes…
If you have read previous BM reviews of Babybird you might know he has quite a dark persona, so you may take all this with a large sack of salt, but there are some genuine emotions at play here…
‘No Air’ has Stephen using his best vocals to describe — oh shit, carving his own coffin – electronic, dark, and short…
‘This Song’s For You and Nobody Else’ could be a chart-topper, it is catchy enough, but the subject matter is skewed, and it is over before it even gets to the point.
BM can’t help but thinking that Babybird just can’t help himself, talent wasted yes but sometimes intentionally? ‘Bonebox’ is stupidly catchy but comes to nothing…
The last track is another 7 minute epic, about ‘Oh The Photographs I Took Inside My Coffin’ – is a lingering ballad, another BB classic…
What is it with Babybird – he is breaking the rules for what previous 90s “chart toppers” should do in the new digital age, and is kicking against the pricks – with resonance, because his talent is still huge, and should be recognised as such…
