Stereotypically, Billy Bates is a big bloke with a big voice. Which he uses to great effect in the tunnel-like Cabaret Voltaire, his opening ‘number’ more like Thom Yorke calling from a minaret – a rambling, nagging vocal sound, over stuttering flamenco guitar.
