Arctic Monkeys successfully kicked off their UK tour on October 23, playing at Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena. They performed twenty tracks to a sell-out crowd, opening the set with ‘Do I Wanna Know’, their first single from the recent studio album ‘AM’.

The set was well thought-out, offering fans a great selection of their new tracks and old. Tunes like ‘Dancing Shoes’ sat between the newer tracks such as ‘Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High’ – check out NME for the full set list. While the tunes were excellent the band didn’t pay much attention to the crowd – meaning that something was certainly lacking for the audience. Frontman Alex Turner did address the crowd in order to dedicate ‘I Bet You Look Good on The Dancefloor’ to the Geordie lasses in the audience.

Despite the lack of conversation the audience cried out for an encore, chanting “Arctic” over and over until the band came back onstage. The encore consisted of three tunes – a slowed down version of ‘Mardi Bum’ followed by ‘One For The Road’, a fitting title for an encore. The final song for the night was ‘R U Mine?’ and with that the gig was over.

Record breaker
The Arctic Monkeys new studio album is a record breaker. ‘AM’ sold 157,000 copies in the first week of release and they are the first band ever to have five consecutive number one albums on an independent record label. ‘AM’ nearly made it to the fastest selling album of 2013, only to be beaten by Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories.
Critics have warmly received the band’s latest album as well as the fans. It is being hailed as the bands best work since they released Favourite Worst Nightmare over six years ago in 2007. ‘AM’ has landed the Arctic Monkeys with a nomination for this year’s Mercury Prize, which they won back in 2006. This year they have been nominated with the likes of David Bowie, Disclosure and Jake Bugg.
The band has enjoyed major success in the UK, often being described as the best band in the UK. The British music press are claiming their latest album is the greatest album ever made. They are also enjoying success stateside with the first single from ‘AM’ debuting in the US charts at number 6.

All about the Rock & Roll
Alex Turner is certainly channelling rock and roll with his current image. His latest hair style is a fantastic quiff that is obviously rockabilly inspired that works perfectly with his leather jacket. As for the new sound of the album you can definitely here some of their inspirations such as Black Sabbath and even a dash of Dr.Dre. If you miss Arctic Monkey’s UK tour, keep up to date with tickets for upcoming concerts to make certain you don’t miss out on seeing your favourite artists live.
