The first track from forthcoming album ‘Lazybody’, ‘Cocoon’ is the Edinburgh singer-songwriter at her best, with more instrumentation than previous tracks, piano and fiddle to the fore and a good backbeat too.
The lyrics are also more assertive, verbally riffing on themes on control in relationships, with references to “changing hairstyles” and “changing body, mood”… and “I don’t mind, till I mind”…
“Do you want me to be…” is the constant theme, and does she mind, or not?
This is a complex piece of pop, layered and delicate at times, but definitely more in yer face this time around… It is fair to say that Annie Booth has a heapful of talent and this tune is great, a kind of Carol King meets Riot Grrl – well, maybe…!
