At first it’s tempting to dismiss Alex Cornish as another Chris Martin copyist looking to make a fast buck. His self-released single ‘Untied’ sounds pretty enough, but in a rather bland, Coldplay-esque way. However, listen beyond these initial prejudices and you realise Cornish has a way with a tune. After a few more spins, ‘Untied’ reveals itself as a majestic piece of song-writing. The sweeping string arrangement certainly enhances the sound nicely but you have to admire the fact that these are no studio musicians- Cornish plays violins, viola and cello on the record in addition to piano, guitar and vocals. If the Edinburgh based singer-songwriter keeps crafting songs of this quality then it can’t be too long before the major labels beckon.
