This lethal combination of former Phantom Band vocalist Rick Redbeard (who has been doing some decent solo stuff since their untimely demise) and David McAuley (Strike The Colours, among other projects) gives us a strikingly dramatic track on Lost Map, the lead for a forthcoming album.
The track’s semi-ambient beginnings appear to these ears to emerge from some kind of ‘Under The Skin’- esque unnamed landscape, with Rick’s so-distinctive, so-gorgeous voice recalling “staying out all the time”, before the mood changes for the worse – “running in the darkness, following a feather…” as the music mutates into a more threatening scenario. “Let’s Go, Let’s Go…” – or is the narrator actually enjoying this nightmare?
There is definitely something of the night out there… The track recalls some of The Phantom Band’s best moments along with early Arcade Fire and the Celtic restlessness of Idlewild at their best. And does the ambient outro feature actual geese – BM just hopes no geese were harmed in the making of the record.
Hopefully a portent of good things to come on the album, due in May.
