You get the feeling that Greg Dulli wanted to make a very simple and raw album, one which could easily be played live and connect with people.
If so, he’s succeeded admirably. Feelings are a complex business to explore and put across in music. The Afghan Whigs know this and have sensibly just presented both sides plainly and simply which wastes no time in getting going. This album has a very live sound to it because of this.
It’s like, you’re getting your very own private show from The Whigs and, for this, you should feel and be duly privileged. This is a very tight set where every song has had to fight for and earn its place on the disc. If there is one unifying factor amongst the songs, it is that each and every one is gloriously ragged and full on.
This, then, is a fantastic album which leaves you feeling very energetic.
