Comparisons can be invidious, and musicians always want to be known in their own right.
Reviewers, however, can’t ignore the obvious, and Adrian Crowley is, it must be said, quite like Leonard Cohen.
His sound is slow and dark, his baritone rich (he’s a better singer than old Len to be fair) and his lyrics are darkly humourous.
“I’m sorry for starting the fires and faking my death” he sings on ‘Halfway to Andalucia’, before skipping his “poorly-attended” funeral, with departure music ‘Born Free’.
That’s the high point in an album which has as many laugh-out-loud lines as thickly atmospheric instrumentation.
There’s also hints of Scott Walker and Will Oldham – again, not bad company to be in when the songs are this good.
