A New International

Swirly (ANI)

By • Oct 27th, 2020 • Category: Single review

The first new material from this Glasgow-based ensemble for a while, ‘Swirly’ marks a slight change of direction from the accordion-driven flamenco influences of the previous albums and possibly a nod back to (some of) their poppier roots.

There are strings, guitars, vocals and harmonies from the troupe and singer Biff’s vocals soar in a timeless manner which recalls everything from Teenage Fanclub back to The Byrds and Love…

The lyrics are oblique but the transcendent nature of love and time spring to mind as reference points, along with a certain tinge of nostalgia.

Always inventive, always ambitious and always doing it their way, this is a great addition to the ANI canon…
