Unless you`ve been hiding in a coalbunker for the last year, you`ll be well aware of Dundee`s newfound status as the rock&roll capital of Scotland. Bold claims some might say, but can you remember the last time our capital spat forth this many ace bands in such a short amount of time? Exactly. In time to get the party started are Fife four-piece Roots Soundsystem, who crash in (after downing shots at the bar) with the kind of ska assault which would make Buster Blood vessel have a hernia from dancing. Frontman Kev Tate leaps into the crowd in his trademark braces causing a gaggle of stomping crowd members to yelp along raucously.
From the second Sergeant take to the stage tonight, the unblemished venue erupts into a jamboree of flailing limbs and shoulder clambering abandon. The last time we witnessed such local adoration for a band they turned up with a number one album six months later (having not had time to change their jeans). Tonight isn`t about pouting art-pop or angular noise, it`s melodic pop belters from the get-go. Sounding like a giddy Coral hotwiring Lee Mavers` cranium, these Fife rockers have been taken in by the City as their own. Telling it is too, as it seems their fans have known these songs for aeons, and for many a devout Dundonian, they probably have. Our advice to Sergeant, get yourselves a local chant pronto!
