I dont know who this Jesse Malin character is, but he seems to have a lot of famous friends – Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, Bruce Springsteen and Ryan Adams are just some of the rock royalty to have collaborated with Jesse on his new album Glitter in the Gutter. So its incredibly saddening to say that the whole album sounds like Bryan Adams trying to be credible. From the faux-sincere lyrics, Americana-tinged ballads and monotonic vocals, Jesse Malin comes across as trying too hard to make an epic-sounding mainstream album. This record just sounds so tepid and harmless, there needs to be some raw emotion shown instead of overproduced nothingness. Its a shame, because he obviously has some brilliant influences, but simply fails to convert these into an astounding album.
