Following on from Keiran Fourtet Hebden and Motown/James Brown/Miles Davis drummer Steve Reids exchange sessions EPs, Tongues is a new album of collaborations between the two. As a huge Fourtet fan it pains me to say that this record is nowhere near as accessible as Hebdens previous work. Though it starts promisingly, it soon descends into really abstract stuff. Most of the tracks become almost uncomfortable to listen to with series of high frequency blips and bleeps that can be quite harsh on the ears. There are a few really good tracks on here, but herein lies the disappointment for those expecting a Fourtet record and subsequently more than a few good tracks. The album also seems to lack the superb production of Hebdens previous efforts. The pair seem to have created a very futuristic sound, perhaps this is the reason for the aforementioned inaccessibility and indeed why the word Fourtet is nowhere to be seen on the record casing. The world just might not be ready for said futuristic sound.
