Theres some things you certainly may need to know about Captainface. Theyre named after a Boer War casualty (officer Captainface of the imperial Light Horse Regiment to you). They hail from Kinmundy (nope..us neither) and they peddle a peculiar blend of Politico-punk funk and hard rock. So far, so odd. BOOM, the bands debut lp, sees them reeling against the 80s inspired synth poppers flooding the indie disco and going it on their own. Opener You..Yes,you sees them digging at shmindie fashionistas via rusty Rage Aganist The Machine riffs and hammond squelches, toppled with a trembling semi-falsetto shriek and youve got one of the oddest sounding acts this writer has heard in a long time. Local ode The kinmundy stagger sees Vocalist Euan Wemyss somewhat unflattering Cali accent spit venom over a loose rock n roll jaunt, sounding as though it could all cave in, any minute. Captainface clearly revel in this level of difference though, from the apocalyptic LP cover (bombs, nuclear burrows, BOOM- geddit?) to the rather ramshackle song structures, its clear to say they wont be following in the footsteps of a certain Dundee lot with a penchant for never changing their jeans. But so much as you can applaud Captainface for their social stance and eager two-fingered salutes to all, sadly BOOM just doesnt have the impact of an atomic bomb, its possibly more akin to a slingshot-sting.
