Imagine what appears to be the Californian equivalent of Bill Bailey banging out a Folk record with kids keyboards, drumming on hubcaps and playing Appalachian Dulcimers and you have ‘Packrat’.Largely an acoustic Folk LP though it is, T.Hallenbeck deals in traditional Folk (not the cool , post-whatever creepy Folk around nowadays) but old-school ranch n fiddle style Folk. Like a slightly irksome Cat Stevens with a humorous elbow nudge n wink, T.Hallenbeck’s oft religious and social lyricism seem to wash slightly with us stern Brits, which would explain why he’s self financed all his albums (four so far) and recorded it all on his lonesome ‘even mastering the artwork(max points for Indie kudos, then). Highlights ‘Don’t Leave Me Out Here’ and ‘Kitty Hawk’ are worth tracking down, but sadly the words ‘Run.Out.Buy’ don’t pop to mind.
