Smack-mullet central NYC has become so stylish of late it’s hard to imagine a band called Dufus making strictly oddball gypsy-folk could venture from such territory. But with the likes of Regina Spektor and Jack-Jeffrey Lewis keeping it Grade A kooky in their homeland, Dufus may have the right ingredients to make their tenth album sell more than 16 copies. ‘The Last Classed Blast’ begins with ‘Dawn Crusade’, which sees the quintet hopping in with enough acoustic jitter-punk to make Gogol Bordello hide under their bone-marrow flutes. ‘War Is Over’ shows an even more appealing side, and sounds like a hyper Buddy Holly after gorging on jerky mandolin blues. Dufus’ enthusiasm to mash styles and angulated song structures alike also means there’s more than plenty of brainstorming going on here, and when it’s good, it’s a downright jamboree hoot!! Sadly when it’s not so good (the hilariously shite ‘You Weren’t Ready’), you just feel alienated from their gang mentality oddball’s in-house ‘jokes’. The great thing about albums of such differing quality is that you can get straight onto the net and burn the bits you like best. ‘Last Classed Blast’ then; thoroughly entertaining at times, probably great live too, but you need to download this LP in its entirety as much as you need a stuffed Kudu.
