Beatnik Filmstars are one of those bands who have been around for what feels like centuries – certainly I remember reading about them in Melody Maker back in the very early Nineties and I think I bought an album by them in the middle of that decade. Consistently underachieving and never being ‘in the right place at the right time’, Beatnik Filmstars are kind of like The Fall without any success whatsoever. This collection rounds up a clutch of compilation tracks, 7″ singles, remixes, demo tracks, radio sessions and previously unreleased songs. Beatnik Filmstars certainly know how to beat their guitars into submission and when to rein them back in but 31 tracks of lo-fi guitar mugging arranged with little concern for chronological development is maybe too much for the casual listener and the whole thing evokes the feeling of listening to Peel back in the days when Polvo and The Grifters were regulars. I hate to use the phrase, but this is really for completists only.
