Black and White is the new album from Tottenham MC Jermaine Scott a.k.a Wretch 32, and features a lot of credible artists throughout the release, like Ed Sheeran and Example.
Wretch 32 provides great lyrical talent to songs that range from radio-friendly to more grimy tones in a way that other British urban artists have difficulty doing.
‘Unorthodox’ featuring Example is catchy and one of the better tracks on Black and White, sampling samples the Stone Roses ‘Fool’s Gold’ which luckily for Wretch 32, works in his favour.
The album could do with a little less of the R&B vocals that accompany the rap as it becomes a little tired after a few tracks and sometimes takes away from the essence of the songs like in ‘Please Don’t Let Me Go’.
But it works on some tracks like ‘I’m Not The Man’ because it compliments the rap.
‘Traktor’ is a stand out and memorable track from the album with its jittery beat and sharp lyrics.
Overall Black and White is a good album with some really good songs but it does tend to venture towards the more run of the mill urban albums. It’s still worth a listen though.
