White Denim

Workout Holiday (Full Time Hobby)

While most spend their time passed out in all-inclusive resorts looking like befuddled lobsters, White Denim spent their most recent vacation recording this, their debut ‘Workout Holiday’. And just as you would expect from a trio reflecting upon their “blue collar jobs”, it’s awash with agit-clatter rhythms and dirty psych riffs, ultimately the sound of a collective letting loose and having fun. Amid the hyperactive chaos though, the Austin trio also nail some greatly crafted pop moments. ‘Sitting’ is a slice of piano-led pop precision, whilst ‘Mess Your Hair Up’ is a cartwheeling mash of Sonics style riffs and freestyle funk. If anything, its an album that makes you relish their huge live assault even more, a setting which differs greatly from the task of trying to dissect their records. What ‘Workout Holiday’ is though, is a sonic blast of exuberant fight-pop, roaming rock n roll and daringly mathematical structures (imagine MC5 and Devo in a barroom brawl). But ultimately, its unlike anything you’re likely to hear for a while.
