This, according to the accompanying press sheet, is an exploration of separation, through the medium of song. Rounding up ten contemporary folk artists from both sides of the border, this hugely ambitious (and, of that alone, admirable) compilation lets each one tackle a selection of folk standards and self-penned material. Each track concentrates on a different shade to or consequence of separation, be it personal, political, romantic, or physical. In some cases, you get all of these. While slightly overlong and self-indulgent at the edges, this is an excellent piece of work, giving a just voice to folk songs that provide a critique of a post referendum world in the setting of everyday music, which speaks to us all, plainly and simply, about the everyday things that affect us all
