Annoying capitalisation aside, 4AD’s latest signing – Merrill Garbus hails from New England, rather than, say, Soweto. Or indeed Mars. With wailing vocals, guitar that could be Josef K channeled thrugh the Bhundu Boys, ans a time signature that is, frankly, not of this world, it should be a recipe for disaster. Instead it’s a charming slice of afropop that will thrill as many as it bemuses. The Vampire Weekend it’s ok to like.
