Selfish Jean
(Independiente)
For some reason I thought this was about a “selfish GENE” when I heard it - not Gene the band, but the part of the chromosone which makes a person hog the Playstation or eat all the poppadums. But no, Jean is a lassie and she’s selfish, and… in true Travis style - that’s about it, though happily they don’t rhyme “Jean” with “clean” or ‘Scene” - in fact, in their own way, the lyrics are perhaps the best that Fran Healy has written, ahead of rhyming “seventeen” with ”me” or indeed “turn” with, er, “turn”.
Oh, musically it’s also the best thing that they’ve done, ever - cheery, fast and jaunty. In fact, exactly what you’d expect to hear if Travis had been replaced one by one by songwriting robot aliens from Planet Happy.
