Maybe it’s time to stop choosing bands to review just because their name is related to Star Wars, because there’s a dangerous word looming on The Wookies’ press release and that word is “prog”.
But while there are some clear nods to a 70s, experimental, psychedelic influence, there’s actually nothing to be afraid of once you start listening. In fact what they’ve taken from that time is the impetus to be inventive, and throw things together – with an organ, some hand-claps and many joint sing-alongs – to see what comes out. The result lurches joyfully between the gloriously messy, and the neatly written pop song. The Wookies might love prog; but it sure hasn’t done them any harm.
