The Simple Carnival
Me And My Arrow (Sundrift)
As I sift through CDs to review the pile seems weightier than normal. A hefty metal case falls from the pile, and down lands ‘Me and My Arrow’, the four-track EP from American musician The Simple Carnival.
It is quite a juxtaposition from the tin case to its uber-breezy contents, and from influences such as the Beach Boys and Sufjan Stevens more bubbly instances emerges a delightful quartet of ditties that are heart-warming simple in their concept.
Track ‘Over Coffee And Tea’ resembles track one, side one of Lift Music Classics but is enjoyably silly, while highlight ‘Really Really Weird’ is just Sunday afternoon chic, effortless in its execution and sweet to listen to.
To take this record at face value and to appreciate it merely as a pet project for an enthusiastic composer is the approach required in order to obtain maximum satisfaction from this little gem of a record.
