Jeff Boller - the one man band and multi-instrumentalist behind the Simple Carnival - doesn’t rock. In fact, he makes a virtue of his inability, not to play guitar, but not PLAYING guitar. No, the lack of crunching riffs and wank… sorry, ‘virtuoso’ axemanship - makes for a pleasant change in a world sometimes obsessed by overproduction. It’s lightweight pop, sure, but in the same way that Nick Lowe, Teenage Fanclub or even the Beach Boys make sunny, airy, music - throwaway pop that you’ll want to hang onto.
