A Sky With No Stars
(Ghost Records)
From the title of their album, it is clear that these Italians (not Canadian) are the melancholic type. Their brand of melancholy is one of nostalgia of late nights on the beach. Despite their name, or their country of origin, their well crafted indie pop is far more suited to California in the summertime and song titles such as ‘Ode To The Season’ / ‘Love Story Of The Moon, North Side Of Summer’, ‘15th Of August’ and ‘Summer Teenager’ sound exactly like the connotations they suggest.
A Sky With No Stars is an album of many delights, mixing Beach Boys style harmonies with intelligent pop punk. The result sounds somewhere between Husker Du and The Shins. One problem that the band might encounter is how authentic their sound is when they come from Italy. Yet when the songs are as good as this it would be silly not to listen to The Canadians. This is an album that will be best appreciated outdoors in the summer with a campfire and a couple of beers.
