It’s hard not to mention Rod Jones’ previous life with Scottish indie giants Idlewild when talking about any new incarnation or musical project he may be involved in. It’s like the elephant in the room that everyone keeps mentioning. However, The Birthday Suit don’t deserve to merely be a side-note in the musical history of Jones’ career.
Since their 2011 formation they’ve released two solid albums, with a third, A Hollow Hole of Riches, penned in for a March 2014 release.
The first single taken from that album, ‘A Bigger World’, is released on November 4th via Sing It Alone and features Scott Hutchinson from Frightened Rabbit. The song does a neat little turn as jangling, upbeat pop tune complete with Jones’ love it or hate it vocal delivery (I, luckily, fall into the former category.)
Jones’ song writing capabilities can’t be questioned – look to debut solo album A Sentimental Education and songs such as ‘Wonderful’ to see what he’s capable of – or alternatively pick this up, if rousing choruses and catchy string accompaniments are your thing you’ll like this. In The Birthday Suit, it seems, Jones has really found a home away from home. No talk of elephants.
