The Big Pink

Velvet (4AD)

By Jamie Cameron • Feb 19th, 2010 • Category: short players

Think techno, fused with crushing guitar sounds, digital noise and piano. Then you’re halfway to understanding the sound of The Big Pink blasting from the speakers. Lead track ‘Velvet’ has elements of 80’s techno pop accompanied by flowing backing vocals to create a massive sound that washes over the listener and melodies that infatuate you.
The second track is a remix of the first - titled ‘Velvet (Perversion)’ - and takes the entire song down a notch, adding in a more prominent piano part whilst keeping the obscure noises and catchy melodies that hook you into the original song.
The third track, ‘These Arms Of Mine’ takes the sound down again, with vocal layers and harmonies accompanied by the atmospheric guitar lines that have become vital to the sound of the band.
However, ‘These Arms Of Mine’ appears to detract from the upbeat feeling through the other two songs and it could be a step too far away from the sound expected, sounding like it was missing something. Perhaps deliberately leaving us wanting more?
