Pick Up Sticks / SAC Attack (Armellodie)

By Bernhard Bessing • Feb 5th, 2010 • Category: short players

Billed by many as Scotland’s top live act, just how do the reportedly remarkable live exploits of the Glasgow-based three-piece translate onto record? Well, the opening notes of ‘Pick Up Sticks’ don’t give much away. It’s a kind of jiggy tune with a vaguely African (or Vampire Weekend) vibe that when it picks up ends up in a singalong chant, kind of Sesame Street goes post rock.
‘SAC Attack’ is very different. Starting with a massive atonal multi-digited guitar lick, it expands into an all-over-the-place effort that may well be too complex for your average ears and perhaps explains the presence of ‘Pick Up Sticks’ on this release. A single for the pop kids as well as the serious chin-strokers - that has to bode well for the future.
